Frisco Sewer Camera Inspection
If you’re fighting frequent stubborn clogs, multiple slow-draining fixtures, or persistent odors coming from toilets and tubs in your North Texas home, these could be signs of a bigger issue. Instead of taking a destructive approach, we can inspect your pipes, drains, and sewer lines using advanced sewer cameras. As both a preventative and diagnostic tool, sewer cameras give us a non-destructive look into the condition of your home’s drains and sewer lines.
The team at Earl’s Plumbing frequently uses sewer cameras to identify issues like sewer bellies, main line clogs, pipe leaks, and other vulnerabilities in home plumbing systems. With the insight and expertise of our licensed Frisco plumbers, this tool allows us to accurately diagnose problems and choose the right course of action for your plumbing system’s long-term health.

These are the most common questions that we get asked from our customers.
What is a Frisco Sewer Camera Inspection and How Does it Work?
When it comes to a “Sewer Camera System,” there are several different brands, models, and quality differences. Service plumbers in Frisco, TX typically use hand carry, portable versions and that is what we will focus on throughout this tutorial. All of these function roughly the same and are usually an all-in-one system that is specifically designed for use in sewer lines and other very confined spaces. Most will have a fixed but flexible camera head that is mounted to a cable that is commonly referred to as a “push rod.” The push rod is typically coiled up inside of a reel and comes in varying stiffnesses & lengths, but the average length is around 100’. The push rod is what allows you to manually control & navigate the camera through the different lines and around fittings or obstructions. The push rod also houses the wiring that transmits the video feed from the camera head back to the recording system.
Sewer cameras are a valuable & indispensable tool, but they are not cheap with entry level models starting around $4000. But there is another tool that is required to make the camera even more valuable and that is the “Line Locator.” Good cameras will also have a sonde device inside the head of the camera body. The imbedded sonde will broadcast a radio signal, and that signal is picked up by the line locator. Better equipment in the hands of a skilled & experienced plumbing company can make accurate locations within inches. And this is important when trying to identify the exact location and depth of a break or line because location & depth play a significant part in the overall price of the estimate & final repair.
When Should I Schedule a Sewer Camera Inspection in Frisco?
The most common reason to need a sewer camera inspection in Frisco, TX is after a problem is determined and resolved. At least temporarily resolved! A common example would be when the toilets that are struggling to flush or when you flush the toilet or use the sink, waste water begins to come up in the tub or shower drain. For homes in North Texas, if there is an issue with the main line this will usually first appear in the first floor bathroom that is closest to the front of the home. In this example, it is possible that you have damage to the main sewer line that leads to the city sewer system. An example of a prime cause of this is a mature tree that was planted in the middle of the yard directly over the sewer line. You see, HOA rules usually require at least one tree and looks best in the middle of the yard. And that rule is in perfect conflict with “Basic Plumbing 101” where the main sewer line is also usually in the middle of the yard because that is also the middle of the home and that is the most efficient way to run the sewer lines. So, in this instance, a plumber would arrive and identify the issue. If you called Earl’s Plumbing, we will probably be able to identify this over the phone with a few questions and “Google Street View.” This always freaks people out because they are in denial and do not want this type of news, but 49 out of 50 times we are right. Regardless, this is where a camera inspection is required. Once the line is cleared of the obstruction, a camera would be used to validate the issue and identify the location & depth.
Outside of an obvious clog or drainage problem that requires sewer cleaning in Frisco, we have used our sewer camera to identify mystery leaks and mystery smells. Sometimes sewer line breaks or cracks can be in a fitting on a vent pipe or a sewer line leading from the upstairs to downstairs lines. So, there would not be a clog in this situation but maybe a sewer smell or water damage appearing in an odd area that is not near a bathroom or water source. Other times we have used the camera to identify nail & screw intrusions into sewer lines. Somebody was hanging a picture or shelf and unknowingly penetrated the sewer line or vent stack pipe in the wall. This is very common in commercial food service environments.
Outside of there being an obvious or known problem where a camera inspection is the most logical next step, the most commonly called in request reason is pending a real estate transaction. Usually residential but also some commercial properties. They call wanting a camera inspection, but what most do not realize is that the camera does not have a steering wheel. We cannot make it turn left, right, or up. The camera is pushed through the sewer line system by hand and the design of the system and shape of the various fittings determines the path the camera takes. So, what that means is that the only line that can fully or easily viewed is the main line (“the trunk of the tree”). Although a sewer camera is the only device that can identify a sewer line belly, it is usually NOT what is needed first OR the only thing that is needed.
What is likely needed more or in conjunction with the sewer camera inspection is a Hydrostatic Pressure Test. These complement each other.
Lastly, it is best to call an experienced plumber in that area that is familiar with the homes & neighborhoods. One that has been around a little while and knows the common problems by neighborhood. In Frisco, McKinney, Plano, Allen, Little Elm, Prosper, The Colony or one of the immediate adjacent communities, which would be Earl’s Plumbing. Let us help determine what tests & inspections are best for your potential home purchase based on city/area, age, buyers disclosures, and/or your inspection report.

How Much Does it Cost to Have a Sewer Camera Inspection in North Texas?
A sewer camera and line locator are two of the most expensive tools that our Frisco plumbers have in their arsenal. Because the combined price of these two pieces of equipment will easily exceed $7000 for decent equipment, not every truck will have one or both. But that is okay because not every technician has the skills & experience to operate these somewhat fragile devices. When you combine the cost of equipment, the fragility of the camera and the experience needed to know what you are looking at and how to operate the equipment, there is an obvious cost associated with the service. This varies from one company to the next.
At Earl’s Plumbing, the charge varies on the service being provided and also the likelihood of a more significant issue being involved. In other words, let say we are at your home clearing a clogged main sewer line. The plumbers clears the line and pulls back a mass of roots on the head of the drain clearing machine. Roots (or mud) would be a clear indication of a significant problem! In this instance, if the truck has a camera & locator, the plumber will likely use the sewer camera to identify the break(s) and the locator to identify the exact location & depth. In this instance, there would likely NOT be a charge for the camera use because there is no possible way for us to give you an estimate for the break repair without knowing its location, depth and/or amount of pipe length impacted. In other words, a camera inspection might be included as an add-on to a job with no additional charges since we are already on site.
Another scenario where there “IS” a charge, might include a known sewer break OR line repair. Maybe the property owner received an estimate and wants a second opinion & estimate. In this case, there is no clog to clear at the present time because that was already done. But the use of the camera & locator would be required for us to provide an apples for apples price estimate. Similarly, we might have to use the camera & locator to map out the sewer lines under your slab to provide an accurate estimate for a spot repair, a belly repair, OR for a full sewer line replacement in Frisco. In either of these cases, there is obviously time, effort & experience required so there is a cost associated with this service. That cost could range from $250 to $700 depending upon the size of the home and scope of the work. In addition, there are instances where there is an upfront cost for this type of service BUT if we end up completing the repair, a portion of the camera & location service that was already paid might be applied as a discount towards the final invoice of a much larger and more costly repair.
Call (945) 523-8700Can a Sewer Camera Inspection Detect Tree Root Intrusions?
A sewer camera (and locator) in an experienced plumbers hands can detect a variety of problems. Small cracks in a fitting or pipe junction that caused a Hydrostatic Pressure Test to fail but has not yet produced a root infiltration are hard to identify without a trained eye. On the other hand, roots and/or a complete separation are fairly obvious even to the unskilled eye.
Another obvious and easy to identify problem with a sewer camera is a “sewer line belly.” A belly will not cause a NOT a “Hydrostatic Pressure Test” to fail but are significant problems that usually gets worse with time and could lead to a break or pipe separation. For reference, a sewer line must have continual downward slope from the farthest fixture in the back of the home all the way to the street. The result of this downward slope that is known as “fall” in the plumbing world allows water & waste to (as the saying goes) “…flow downhill.” A belly is when the underground pipe loses this downward slope (fall) and forms a sag. On camera, a belly is identified by standing water in the pipe. The amount or depth of the standing water indicates the degree to which the problem currently exists. A minimal amount of water standing in the pipe is a problem that eventually gets worse with time versus a fully submerged camera head would indicate a significant problem. The latter of which you have probably already started to notice with clogged toilets and/or slow draining drains. Having a good locator (and camera) along with the necessary skills to operate both in conjunction with each other are important when building a proper repair estimate.

Are Sewer Camera Inspections Necessary for Home Purchases?
There are a variety of voluntary plumbing tests & inspections that could be done for a home that is under contract or pending sale. A significant role in determining what if any tests should be done will be impacted by the age of the home or year it was built and then to a certain extent where in the DFW area that home is located.
In regards to a “Sewer Camera Inspection” and in combination with a “Hydrostatic Pressure Test,” the rule of thumb is 15 years old or older. The overriding caveat to that “15 year” mark is if the home has ever had foundation repairs OR there are signs of foundation related issues. In that case, you absolutely want to have both a Hydrostatic Pressure Test AND a Sewer Camera Inspection performed. A successful test & inspection can rule out any major sewer line related issues.
There are other expensive plumbing repair or replacement projects that North Texas home purchasers need to be concerned about. Once again, based on age, Slab Leaks and Main Line Water Leaks should be tested for if the home is nearing or around the 20 year mark. Both of these get tested by what is called a “Static Pressure Test” which tests the homes domestic water lines for hidden leaks.
In regards to all other plumbing items, Earl’s Plumbing offers a full inspection of the homes entire Plumbing & Natural Gas systems via our VIP Advantage Membership Plan. This does not include some of the more time consuming advance testing & diagnostics mentioned earlier, but it would include some lighter testing and visual inspections of virtually everything else in the home including the Water Heaters, Shutoff Valves, Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV), Double Check Valve (irrigation), etc. The 10 year mark is when we start to see the normal wear & tear plumbing items such as this start to fail or lose full functionality. The “VIP Advantage Membership Annual Inspection” assigns a color coded letter grade to each inspected item which indicates the level of functionality. And should an item be concerning or showing signs of potential failure, an itemized estimate would be created along with a build in “VIP Advantage Member Discount.”
