What Are Ice Maker and Washer Valve Boxes?
Washer valve boxes, also sometimes called laundry boxes, are recessed units that house the water supply connections and drains for washing machines. They are usually installed in the wall behind your appliance, acting as a centralized location for its plumbing connections.
Ice maker outlet boxes work similarly, housing water supply valves for a refrigerator’s ice maker or water dispenser. In both situations, the valves are usually fused with the box itself, making repairs tricky for DIYers and handymen. A portion of the wall will typically need to be cut away to access and replace these valves. At Earl’s Plumbing, we will install an access panel when we complete the job, saving you money on any future repair needs!
Because the washer box and ice maker valves are not easily accessible and therefore rarely used (turned on or off) they can easily develop scale, corrosion and other defects over time. This can lead to leaks or drips . These shutoff valves typically have a limited lifespan of about 8-12 years before they become only partially functioning so proactive planning may be a consideration.
