Answers to Your Frequently Asked Questions
As a business owner, you need all the facts to make the best decision for your company. Earl’s Plumbing has the deep knowledge, expertise, and respect for commercial enterprises to find the right solution for you.
High-Recovery / Large-Capacity Commercial Heater Installations
For high-demand and/or high-temp situations like restaurants, hotels, spas, and other businesses, certain specifications are a code necessity. Earl’s Plumbing can deliver, set up, haul away, and install ALL of the various commercial models, like Rheem, A.O. Smith, Bradford & White, State, and many others. This includes high-demand, high-recovery, large-capacity storage tank, and power-vented tank units.
Basic High-Efficiency Commercial Tank Water Heater Installations
Healthcare, childcare, and other facilities also require commercial water heaters that can withstand additional usage. However, they may not need the faster recovery times and ultra-high temps required by restaurants and hotels. Earl’s Plumbing can also deliver and install high-efficiency 75- or 50-gallon commercial water heaters that meet those required expectations. This selection includes electric and natural gas water heaters.
Small Point-of-Use Tank & Instant On-Demand Water Heater Installations
Smaller and/or low-demand applications like offices, breakrooms, and shops just need enough hot water for basic cleaning and handwashing. Earl’s Plumbing can furnish and install 30, 20, and 10-gallon electric tank water heaters that include platform-mounted or suspended, above-the-ceiling installation requirements. This would also include smaller single point-of-use heaters that are mounted below individual sinks.
Commercial Tankless Water Heater Installations
Earl’s Plumbing installs more Navien tankless water heaters than any other plumbing company in Frisco, McKinney, Plano, Allen, and beyond. And because Navien is the #1 selling tankless water heater in North America, you can find their product in many restaurants and businesses throughout the DFW metroplex.
The same Navien tankless water heater used in residential applications (NPE-240A2) can also be used in commercial applications with adjustable temperatures past 180 degrees. But while the units are the same, proper installation, sizing, programming, and configuration make the two types of installations uniquely different.
The key word here is “proper.” Because we are Navien Factory Certified and Level 3 trained, we have direct interaction with the Navien engineers, systems designers, and field support teams. We can install and cascade (create a communication link between) up to 32 Navien NPE-240A2 tankless water heaters in one location.
With proper installation, your business can save thousands of dollars a year in water waste and gas utilities. Without proper installation, you just have a partially effective water-heating device.
Are tankless water heaters good for commercial use?
For smaller commercial applications and offices under 5000 sqft, a Navien tankless heater installation is very similar to residential installs with slightly more demand and sizing requirements. The same proper installation requirements are needed, as well as some special configurations and programming. You can save thousands of dollars in water waste and gas utilities by converting to a Navien tankless water heater.

Earl’s Plumbing’s preferred tankless system is Navien. However, we do install and replace other brands when it makes more sense or when there is a warranty-swap issue. Our network of wholesalers and suppliers carries repairs and units for Rinnai, Rheem, Noritz, A.O. Smith, and some of the other lesser-known brands.
Earl’s Plumbing can perform all diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs for all brands of commercial heaters. We equip each truck with the proper gas and electrical tools to support the diagnostic efforts of the manufacturer’s technical staff (including manometers and voltage meters). Some of the more typical commercial water heaters repairs are:
- Gas valves
- Spark igniters
- Pressure switches
- Venting-related issues
Earl’s Plumbing is committed to getting your water heater back up and running as quickly and cost-efficiently as possible.
Commercial Tank Water Heater Maintenance
When a plumbing contractor installs the breadth and selection of commercial water heating products that Earl’s Plumbing does, it should go without saying that they repair and maintain these units, too. No company can stock all of the parts for every water heater made. But rest assured, we make it a priority to get your problem diagnosed and get your business up and running as soon as possible.
Most tank-type commercial water heaters are maintenance-free. It helps longevity if you keep the area around the water heater clean and free of supplies and foot traffic. This is especially true if your unit is a fan-forced combustion or direct venting type of heater.
Tankless Water Heater Repairs and Maintenance
ALL brands of tankless water heaters require varying degrees of maintenance. Maintenance suggestions and/or requirements vary by manufacturer. Most manufacturers recommend the unit(s) should be cleaned and serviced every 500 hours of use. Commercial tankless water heaters in food service environments should have their tankless heater(s) maintenance performed at least every 6 months at a minimum.
You may consider more frequent maintenance depending on the volume of dishes that your establishment washes and whether you serve breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner. Ultimately, it’s not our money, but to protect your investment and to prevent costly downtime, make sure that your tankless water heater is serviced and maintained regularly. This will help you avoid irreparable damage to the heat exchanger from calcification, foreign debris, and scale build-up.
It should be noted that warranties for all types of water heaters in commercial applications are often reduced in comparison to their residential counterparts. All warranties have stipulations, and part of that usually requires that the unit be properly installed (see “Installations” above). Many tankless water heater manufacturers also require that you show proof of regular maintenance should a warranty-related repair or an irreparable failure take place.
Recirculation Pumps
Many municipalities require that hand-washing sinks and/or food prep areas have a minimal wait time for hot water. This is often accomplished by the use of recirculation pumps. But there are different pumps and different applications for different water heating systems (tank or tankless).
Different pump sizes may also be required based on the size of the building and technical specifications such as head pressure. Other considerations and add-ons might be required when a recirculation loop or line is not present to make this system work properly. Earl’s Plumbing has resolved the problems of thousands of business owners.
Anti-Scald Devices
Some cities require anti-scald devices in hand-washing areas to avoid safety issues. It’s also a good idea to have these devices in place for insurance and lawsuit mitigation efforts. If your hot water system is shared throughout the entire building, you must have anti-scald devices installed at fixtures where potential injury could occur.
This is especially true when temperatures are required to be hot enough to wash and sanitize dishes and utensils. The temperatures required for dishwashing (even chemically aided cleaning) could be dangerous in a public restroom or prep sink.
Anti-scald devices typically have a livelihood of about 3 years before they stop functioning properly, and they should be replaced fairly regularly to avoid injury concerns. Earl’s Plumbing can find the right solution for your needs.
Water Quality Systems
We install a variety of water treatment products that can improve the overall water quality that you are able to offer your customers. These include Water Filtration & Conditioner Systems, Template-Assisted Crystallization Systems, and Water Softener Systems. For more information, schedule an appointment to discuss the options, costs, features, and benefits of the different options available.
