Should a plumber install a dishwasher?

We know we may sound biased when we say yes—you should call a licensed plumber to install your dishwasher.

But let us explain why we always make this recommendation.

• Safety: Dishwashers require both electrical and plumbing components to work. Clearly, water and electricity don’t mix well—so if your appliance isn’t plumbed properly, the results could be catastrophic. Even if leaks don’t affect the electrical system, they can cause extensive water damage.
• Complexity: While you can purchase DIY dishwasher installation kits from big box stores, these components aren’t going to be high quality. Plus, there are many plumbing components to consider when installing a dishwasher that you or a handyman may not be familiar with. Our professional plumbers know them all and will make sure they’re in proper working order before we leave.
• Manufacturer’s Warranty: Improper installation can void your manufacturer’s warranty, meaning that if you should need to repair or replace the unit, you’ll be out of pocket for it.

Why is my garbage disposal suddenly loud?

Loud, metallic, and/or grinding noises likely mean that an object is stuck in the blades of your disposal. The first thing you should do is stop running the unit to avoid any further damage.

Because dealing with the system’s extremely sharp blades can be very dangerous, it’s best to call in a professional to remove the obstruction. Whatever you do, do NOT reach down the disposal, especially without cutting power to the system at the breaker.

Why does my garbage disposal smell so bad?

A garbage disposal more-or-less liquifies food waste to be cleared away with the rest of your home’s wastewater. However, larger scraps and residue can build up and start to stink over time.

Fortunately, this issue has a simple DIY solution! Simply pour in a couple of tablespoons of baking soda followed by a half cup of white vinegar. Allow to sit for 10 minutes, then flush with hot water. This mixture will scour away most offending odors. If that doesn’t solve the problem, a plumber may recommend taking the system apart for a deep clean.
