Does the Brand of a Water Heater Matter?

Believe it or not, only three companies manufacture, market, and sell all of the storage tank water heaters sold in the United States (not including tankless or hybrid models like Essency). Those 3 manufacturers are A.O. Smith, Rheem, and Bradford & White. Combined, these companies produce and market at least 16 different brands of storage tank water heaters, each with many different sizes and models (much like car manufacturers).
